Washington, D.C.: Lottery sports betting handle up, revenue down in January

(Washington).- The DC Lottery released its latest figures for sports betting in the United States capital. Compared to the last months of 2022, January had the biggest sports betting handle. It was also the most prosperous month in terms of players’ winnings.

Washington, D.C.: Lottery sports betting handle up, revenue down in January

With its monthly high of nearly $8.8 million, handle in January 2023 was also higher compared to the same month the year prior. In January 2022, the amount wagered equaled $ 5,7 million.

The Lottery’s GambetDC also revealed fiscal year-to-date numbers. The year-to-date total amount played was $29,294,801, with $25.9 million won and 917,796 bets placed. Although the sports betting handle was up in January, the revenue was down. In fact, January 2022 revenue ($952,918.39) was higher than January 2023 (862,722.53).

DC Lottery reports strong sports betting handle in January 2023

According to the DC Lottery report, the total amount played in January 2023 was $8,777,454. The amount won was $7.9 million while there were 225,476 bets.

That’s a significant increase from December 2022, during which the sports betting handle was $6,405,452. Winnings equaled $5.6 million with 205,571 wagers placed.

November figures were better than December numbers, with the betting handle still lower than in January. Washington DC players wagered $6,583,194 in November while placing 236,064 bets. The total winnings amount was $5,739,676.

The betting handle in October totaled $7,528,701, with almost $6.7 million won and 250,685 bets placed.

DC sports betting revenue and handle also declined in December

Washington DC sports betting revenue and handle both declined month-over-month during December. Meanwhile, the state’s generated revenue increased on a year-on-year basis.

Washington DC player spending for December equalled $18.7 million which was 12.6% lower than the $21.4m generated in November 2022.

Compared to last year, that mark is also 3.1% less than the $19.3m wagered in December 2021. When it comes to gross gaming revenue, it reached $2.4m in December 2022. The figure is also a 7.7% drop from $2.6m in November.

However, the state’s generated revenue was 71.4%, up from $1.4m in December 2021.
